Sinhala and Tamil classics from Soul Sounds

View(s):

Well-known all female choir Soul Sounds, directed by Soundarie David Rodrigo, will present an evening of Sinhala and Tamil classic favourites –‘Spandana’ – on May 9 at the Lionel Wendt Theatre at 7.30 p.m. The show is a repeat of the one presented in November 2014 as part of the group’s 10th year celebrations.

Audiences will be treated to some of the best known and loved local classics, such as Mangala Mohotha, Nim Him Sewwa, Ganga Addara, Master Sir, as well as popular Tamil hits like Chinna Chinna Aasai, Nilaave vaa, to name a few. The show held last year was in collaboration with the Sri Lankan Maestro Pandit Amaradeva and the Amaradeva Foundation, and this time’s show will also feature a tribute section to the late Nimal Mendis who worked closely with the choir and was a great inspiration to Soul Sounds. The Tamil classics have been taken from artists such as Illaiyaraja and A.R Rahaman, whose music has transcended boundaries.

Soul Sounds was the first Sri Lankan choir to compete and win at an international choral competition – in 2004 at the Llangollen International Eisteddfod in Wales and in 2006 at the World Choir Games in Xiamen, China. The choir continues to take up the challenge to venture into different genres of music. The choir is honoured to have been given the opportunity to perform the timeless classics of artists such as Visharada Amaradeva, Nimal Mendis and Mignonne Fernando. It was Mignonne’s ‘Mangala Mohotha’ that first won the choir international recognition when they gained second place in the prestigious Llangollen International Musical Eistedfodd in Wales in 2004.

Soul Sounds celebrated its 10th anniversary last year and the choir continues to grow from strength to strength. Soul Sounds is supported by Fairway Holdings and Dimo Lanka.
