Driving tests soon with automatic vehicles

The next generation of Sri Lankan drivers would soon be licensed after passing tests using automatic transmission vehicles against the standard, ages-old manual gears.

Motor Traffic Department (MTD) Commissioner General S. H. Harischandra has granted permission for trial runs on vehicles with automatic transmission and the consequent issue of driving licences.

The holder of an ‘automatic’ driving licence will be permitted to drive only auto vehicles and not manual vehicles but that era will end when the vehicle industry will be dominated by automation.

This move comes since many vehicles including vans and heavy vehicles such as buses imported today are fully automated now.
