The year 2015 is going to be a cinematically significant year for Sri Lanka as a number of much awaited films are to be released during this year. Some of these films were made years ago but were waiting in the line due to various reasons.  Among them are Satyajith Maitipe’s ‘Boradiya Pokuna’ which has won international acclaim. Maitipe’s maiden film stars Kaushalya Fernando, Dilani Abeywardena, Duminda de Silva, Dharmasiri Bandaranayake in the main cast. Prasanna Vithanage’s ‘Oba Nethuwa Oba Ekka’ starring Shyam Fernando and Indian actress Anjali Patil is slated to be released in 2015. The film represented Sri Lanka at a number of international film festivals.

Another such film is veteran actress Nita Fernando’s ‘Swara’, a story that revolves around the AIDS victims and the problems they face from the society.  Prasanna Jayakody’s ‘28’ which has already received rave reviews in the international film festivals will be released this year and stars Semini Iddamalgoda, Sarath Kothalawela, Mahendra Perera and Rukmal Nirosh in the main cast.

Boodee Keeerthisena’s ‘Nimnayaka Hudakalawa’ starring Saumya Liyanage and Sangeetha Weeratne is another much awaited movie to be released this year. Young filmmaker Malith Hegoda’s ‘Dekala Purudu Kenek’ (The Strange Familiar) is in the line for 2015. The film starring Samadahi Laksiri and Bimal Jayakody is produced by Lal Hegoda, Rasanga Dissanayake, Mohamed Adamaly and Nadira Adamaly.

Prof. Sunil Ariyaratne’s latest film ‘Paththini’ produced by Milina Sumathipala for Sumathi films will be ready for the new year. It stars Uddika Premaratne, Aruni Rajapaksa, Puja Umashankar and many others.  Another young filmmaker Upali Gamlath’s ‘Guru Geethaya’ based on famous Kyrgyz author Chingiz Aitmatov’s world renowned novel ‘First Teacher’ is ready for release this year. The film stars Roshan Ravindra, Kalpani Jayasinghe and Damayanthi Fonseka in the stellar cast.

Well-known journalist, writer, lyricist and teledrama director Rodney Vithanapathirana’s film that was shot in Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom will be screened this year. Produced by Kanthi Alahakone, the film stars Wimal Alahakone, Rebecca Nirmalee, Maureen Charuni and others.  Udara Abeysundara’s ‘Sewaneli’ staring Bimal Jayakody, Nirosha Perera and Chandani Seneviratne will be screened this year. It was produced by Vishwa Balasuriya.

Udayakantha Warnasuriya’s ‘Gindaree’or Bahubuthayo 2 is one of the hilarious movies scheduled for the year. As its first installment Paboda Sandeepani, Rodney Warnakula and Mahendra Perera play the main three roles.
