Getting into shape with Dejan and Hetti

A New Year, new beginnings. If you’re someone who loves making New Year resolutions perhaps a bit more than keeping them, then begin this year afresh with our guide to people and places that might help you focus and stick to your goals. We’ve picked three New Year resolutions from among the many out there and given an option for each, but please note that there are many alternatives for those of you who need a nudge in the right direction.
Good luck and remember that resolutions are only as good as those who make them!
Resolution:  Get fit UBurn Project
The two instructors at UBurn — Dejan and Hetti — are the friendliest guys you’ll meet, but they won’t hesitate to tell you how fit (or not) you are. Once they identify your needs they’ll weave you into their weekday sessions at the Viharamahadevi Park from 6-7 p.m. and 7.30-8.30 p.m.

An average one-hour session incorporates a full body workout, beginning with a light jog or walk around the park. This is followed by a set of warm-up and stretching routines, after which an intense 30-minute session will test your strength. The exercise is a little strenuous at first, make no mistake, but it’s also quite fun and you’ll adjust soon enough. You’ll make some good friends and get an opportunity to people-watch too.

A session is priced at Rs. 400 (the first three sessions are free) and a minimum of one session and preferably two sessions per week are recommended.

Resolution: Travel  Little Adventures
Travel well and travel wise. If seeing the world is your thing then good for you, but there are plenty of things left to see in our own little island too. Let Little Adventures accompany you to some hidden gems around the country including expeditions to the Dorawaka caves, Utuwankanda (Saradiel’s mountain), Kalpitiya and even Colombo.

Off the beaten track with Little Adventures

While it’s not exactly cheap, it’s certainly more sensible than stumbling around blindly if you’re not a seasoned traveller, but would like to visit some sights off the beaten track. Little Adventures offers excursions under five main categories — Sea Adventures, Wild Holidays, Road Safaris, Hiking and Trekking and Wild Adventures. Each excursion is guided by a host and they will often offer you packages that are quirky and fun.

They’ve also just begun their Adventure Peaks Challenge, which will see the team summit all mountains above 2000 metres in Sri Lanka.

Resolution: Quit a bad habit Alcoholics Anonymous/ADIC/Arden
It could be anything — smoking, drinking, substance abuse, overspending. All humans have their vices which is why there are plenty of support groups out there for those of you looking to make a positive change.

Alcoholics Anonymous is operational in the country and has support groups that often meet in Bambalapitiya, Mahabage, Negombo, Mount Lavinia and Ragama. Call 0777519420 for information. The Alcohol and Drug Information Centre (ADIC) runs several rehabilitation and informational programmes — contact 0112584416 for more information. You can also contact the Sri Lanka Anti-Narcotics Association on 0112868494 and they will refer you to someone who can help.

Getting a good handle on your finances needs you to exert a significant amount of self-control. You could check out the Arden Institute, which offers lessons on handling finances as part of its etiquette programme.
