On the subject of Lankan cricketers being housed in New Zealand on Sri Lanka Cricket’s account for six days along with their spouses prior to the World Cup, the Lankan cricket authority has sent the following clarification.

“During their stay on completion of the NZ series the players and support staff will remain and the cost will be covered by SLC [Accommodation, and allowances] and the players and support staff can have their wives along with them and the cost of air ticket will be on players and support staff account.”

Sports Editor Notes: The Sunday Times is not in the business of misquoting.

Nevertheless, we were of the view that the SLC was taking a step in the right direction to boost the morale of the players prior to the all-important date with the ICC World Cup.

Generally it is well known that scores of SLC officials who make no direct impact to the tournament are flown to the destinations on the SLC account and, besides their stay, they even receive a per diem during their stay in the foreign country.

We admit that officials in the calibre of the SLC President, the secretary, and may be a count of another three officials should be there as their presence at the tournament is essential. But through the past experiences we know that there are more non-essential personnel who make these trips and when we heard about the spouses being hosted we were of the impression that at last the SLC was on to a good thing instead of trying to please every Tom, Dick and Harry.
