200 more senior journalists, artistes to receive interest free vehicle loans

Some 200 more senior journalists, artistes and the writers will receive an interest free vehicle loan of Rs.1.2 million under the second phase of the loan scheme announced in the 2015 budget, according to Mass Media and Information Ministry Secretary Charitha Herath.

The second batch of around 200 journalists, artistes and the writers eligible for these loans has already been selected by the Ministry of Mass Media and Information. Earlier a total of 547 journalists received interest free vehicle loans where the interest is being paid by the Treasury under the first phase.

This proposal was originally mooted by the President through the budget -
2012 to implement a relief loan scheme for senior journalists, artists and authors to purchase motor vehicles and to form a fund for their welfare is being implemented.
