Practical guide to bringing up children

View(s):

This book is a labour of love and commitment, from its author Dr. B.J.C. Perera, who having experienced a yawning hiatus in the management of sick children by their parents, has successfully infused a fresh whiff of knowledge and optimism to parents, care givers and doctors. It does not assure a gilded passage to the mastering of childcare, but provides throughout, a treasure trove of information and gems not known to many. His personal diverse experiences of life and views from a perch not privy to most, makes this collection of articles unique.

What is so impressive about the author is that he, as an experienced Paediatrician with very sharply honed clinical skills, has acquired his material and information first hand during his exposure to the many life threatening medical storms that tore away at not just adults but mere morsels of humanity, babies and children. Fortunately he has finally decided to distil his rich and eventful encounters and preserve it for posterity.

This book evolved from articles on child health, serialized in a weekly column in the Island newspaper and which drew a large, varied and responsive audience. The articles have now grown into a book. I anticipate that it will attract an equally appreciative readership.

The book advises and guides one throughout the journey of parenthood. It also attempts to tell you the “right way” to go and serves as a road map that nudges you in a simple and smooth flow of language as you arm yourself with facts and knowledge of what is normal and what is not. It also gives you the confidence to proceed through all the landmarks of childhood, for here is an author who listened to criticism and praise and always worked towards making it a better instrument of its purpose.

Into the first few pages and I am convinced that the biblical command to be fruitful and multiply will be followed with greater confidence armed with this book “Modern Child Health Care: A Guide to Parents” .
