Abductions of wild elephants have been rampant this year, but the authorities responsible have not been able to bring to book the culprits.
The living conditions of the animals in the Dehiwala Zoo is deplorable. The paper previously reported that a number of animals in the care of the zoo management died this year and a considerable number are ill, raising strong doubts about their commitment.

“We hope that the animals will be looked after throughout the year and not focussing on them only on one day,” said Priyantha Siriwardena, a visitor to the zoo from Galle.

The zoo made record revenue last year, after a massive boost in its ticket sales, but little has been done to improve the conditions of the animals. The zoo was crowded yesterday with people visiting the zoo on World Animal Day.
