The Ceylon Planter’s Society will be holding its 78th AGM and social at the “Water’s Edge” on September 27.

In a media release, the society said that it was on November 22, 1936 that the largest gathering of European planters and their wives and a sprinkling of Ceylonese planters assembled at the Queens Hotel, Kandy and the occasion was graced by then Colonial Governor Sir Reginald Edward Stubbs and Lady Stubbs. That was the occasion the Ceylon Planter’s Society was born.

It said the society will continue to uphold those traditions that led to its formation.

Although the total membership of working planters in the society is small the responsibility they bear on the country’s economy, the tens of thousands of persons who live on the plantations and the village around, in the discharge of their daily duties are so much and it has no parallel in any other industrial or services organisation in the Island.
