WNPS lecture: Conserving Sri Lanka’s freshwater fish

Prof. Devaka Weerakoon will deliver the monthly lecture of the Wildlife and Nature Protection Society (WNPS) on “Conserving Sri Lanka’s Native Freshwater Fish: A Far Greater Challenge than Meets the Eye” on Thursday, August 21 at 6.15 p.m. at the auditorium of the Department of Metereology, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 7.

Prof. Weerakoon graduated from the University of Colombo in 1985 with a major in Zoology. He received a Fulbright Scholarship in 1988 to study in USA where he completed his MSc. and PhD. at Illinois State University. In 1995 he returned to the University of Colombo and worked as a conservation biologist. He was also technical advisor for the Red Listing programme of Sri Lanka from 1996 to date.

At present he also serves as the technical advisor for the Ministry of Environment on conservation of threatened species in Sri Lanka. He has also worked as a consultant to the Department of Wildlife Conservation where he has provided technical support for preparation and implementation of protected area management plans, managing alien invasive species in protected areas, habitat mapping, protected area gap analysis, and conducting bird surveys. Entrance is free.
