The executive members of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) have decided to seek an urgent meeting with the Inspector General of Police (IGP), following fresh incidents compromising the security of Association President Upul Jayasuriya.

The members have unanimously decided to urge the IGP to take appropriate measures to ensure the security of Mr Jayasuriya.
The decision comes after an unidentified person who was waiting for Mr Jayasuriya, at his office on Thursday, fled in an unregistered vehicle. This was followed by a similar incident where three men in civilian attire waited outside Mr Jayasuriya’s office, claiming to be waiting for President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s motorcade.

However, SSP-in-charge of State Intelligence Agency claimed that the individuals were conducting a security surveillance for Mr. Jayasuriya, which was contradictory to the explanation given by the individuals at the location, a statement issued by the BASL said.
Mr. Jayasuriya had earlier also complained to the Police about two separate incidents where unidentified persons had followed him. However, the persons responsible have not been identified to date.

The Executive Committee was also advised that, pursuant to investigations conducted by the Police about the previous incidents, the facts have been reported to the Magistrate’s courts of Kaduwela and Colombo. The Committee resolved that the BASL will intervene in these proceedings to take over the prosecution immediately.

The meeting was also attended by a number of senior members including Tilak Marapana P.C., Shibly Aziz P.C. and Faisz Musthapha P.C.
