An exam-oriented education system that only encouraged students to memorise their lessons was the main drawback that prevailed in the education system during the past decades, Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena said at the BMICH yesterday.

Addressing the graduation ceremony of the Diploma in Multimedia conducted by Wijeya Graphics (Pvt) Ltd Mr. Gunawarde said 51 per cent of students follow the arts stream for the GCE Advanced Level and many of them enter society with very few job oriented skills.

“They fail to find employment because they have only a certificate. Therefore (throughout the years) free education has misled our children. We see that there aren’t enough jobs to give to the educated and a lack of educated people for the jobs that are available,” the minister said, adding that there was an imbalance in the system.

The minister also said he was thankful to Wijeya Graphics (Pvt) Ltd for doing a service for youth that the government had failed to do during the past years, stressing the importance of the subject in the modern world.

Speaking at the ceremony, Parliamentarian Ruwan Wijewardene said education was important to any person and what was learnt by an individual could not be stolen by another.

“Everyone cannot be a doctor or an engineer but all students have their own unique talents. Everybody needs each others help. He said training institutes should be introduced for students who fail to find employment in the government sector.

Over 150 diploma graduates from 13 branches around the country received their diploma certificate during the event.
Wijeya Newspapers chairman Ranjith Wijewardene, General Manager of Wijeya Graphics (Pvt) Ltd Major General Ivan Dassanayake and other officials were also present.
