O/L students urged to get ICs to sit the exam

Nearly 225,000 GCE Ordinary Level Examination candidates have not sent in applications for identity cards, Registration of Persons Department Commissioner R. M. S. Sarath Kumar said.

He called on all students, school authorities and education sector officials to forward such applications within the next two weeks
“Around 450,000 students are expected to sit the examination but only half of them have applied for identity cards. If they delay any further we will not be able to issue them. To avoid any problems we request all relevant authorities to send in the applications as soon as possible,” the Commissioner said. He said 110,000 identity cards had been issued while nearly 60,000 applicants were underage and not eligible to possess an identity card.

Mr. Kumara said that his department has to issue identity cards in two languages and therefore the process takes more time than in the past.

“We do not have enough staff but still we are doing our best for the students. We can’t do much if the applications are delayed. Students will have to face many hardships if their applications are delayed,” he said. The Commissioner said that last year his staff were able to issue the identity cards in time and the department did not receive any complaint.

The O/L examination takes place in December every year.
