A Muslim-owned large clothing retail outlet in Panadura was destroyed by fire yesterday.  The Nolimit clothing chain’s legal officer, who did not wish to be identified, estimated the damage at a staggering Rs. 300 million. The cause of the fire at the business establishment, according to Colombo Crime Division (CCD) Chief Inspector Neville Silva, is still not known.

“The Government Analyst and electrical engineers are at the scene for tests. Police teams from Panadura, Borella, Modara and Colombo are also investigating,” he said. The clothing outlet’s security officer P. D. S. N. Amarasinghe said he had seen smoke emanating from the building’s first floor where the store room was located. This happened around 2.50 a.m.

The Panadura fire brigade arrived at around 3.25 a.m. But despite its efforts, the fire could not be controlled. The destruction of the building came in the aftermath of the mob violence in the southwest from last Sunday.
