Havelock SC last year’s runner up made their presence felt and showed that they will be one of the main contenders for the Rugby 7’s title this year when they recorded crushing wins on day one of the Dialog Inter-Club Rugby 7’s tournament played at the Racecourse ground in Colombo yesterday.

Havelock SC chalked up massive wins in the Pool ‘A’ category defeating Air Force ‘C, Navy Sea Horse and Police by margins of over 50 points to top the group.

Two semi finalists of last years tournament Kandy, CH and FC along with CR and FC too had a successful run as they too ended with a hundred percent record to top their respective pools..

The three teams won all the three matches that they played in the Pool ‘B’, ‘C’ and ‘D’ respectively. Kandy and CR and FC fielded two teams with the ‘A’ side winning their matches.

Kandy ‘A’ recorded wins over Air Force ‘B; CR ‘B’ and Army ‘A’ while CH posted wins against Army ‘C’, Peterson SC and Navy Dreadnoughts with CR securing wins over Army ‘B’, Kandy ‘B’ and Air Force ‘A’.

The four teams along with Police, Army ‘A’, Navy Dreadnoughts and Kandy ‘B’ qualified to the Cup quarter finals which are scheduled to be played today.

The Inter-Club Rugby 7’s conducted by the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) and sponsored by Dialog is being contested by 16 teams. But the notable absentee is last year’s champion Hambantota Sharks who were forced to pull out due to the SLRFU disallowing the participation of foreign players.

Pool ‘A’: Havelock beat Air Force ‘C’ 54-0; Police beat Navy Sea Horse 33-10; Havelock beat Navy Sea Horse 52-0; Police beat Air Force ‘C’ 43-0; Havelock beat Police 52-0; Navy Sea Horse beat Air Force ‘C’ 12-5.

Pool ‘B’: Kandy ‘A’ beat Air Force ‘B’ 38-0; CR and FC ‘B’ beat Army ‘A’ 17-12; Kandy ‘A’ beat CR and FC ‘B’ 47-5; Army ‘A’ beat Air Force ‘B’ 24-10; Kandy ‘A’ beat Army ‘A’ 42-7; Air Force ‘A’ beat CR and FC ‘B’ 26-12.

Pool ‘C’: CH and FC beat Army ‘C’ 40-5; Navy Dreadnoughts beat Peterson SC 21-15; CH and FC beat Peterson SC 17-12; CH and FC beat Navy Dreadnoughts 25-14; Peterson SC beat Army ‘C’ 20-12.

Pool ‘D’: CR and FC ‘A’ beat Army ‘B’ 24-10; Kandy ‘B’ beat Air Force ‘A’ 27-12; CR and FC ‘A’ beat Kandy ‘B’ 33-21; Air Force ‘A’ beat Army ‘B’ 38-5; CR and FC ‘A’ beat Air Force ‘A’ 21-12; Kandy ‘B’ beat Army ‘B’ 34-5.

The quarter-final schedule:

Cup: Havelock SC vs Kandy ‘B’, Kandy ‘A’ vs Navy Dreadnoughts, CH and FC vs Army ‘A’ , CR and FC vs Police.

Bowl: Army ‘B’ vs Navy Sea Horse, Peterson SC vs CR and FC ‘B’, Army ‘C’ vs Air Force ‘B’, Air Force ‘C’ vs Air Force ‘A’.
