Words to heal the wounds of division

Next week, a group of noted Sri Lankan writers from the South – Vivimarie Vanderpoorten, Lal Medawattegedara and Ashok Ferrey – will “exchange” their work with young and established writers from the North. There will be two events: the first in the Library Auditorium of Jaffna University on Friday June 6 from 3 p.m to 4.30 p.m; the second at the St Francis Xavier Seminary, Colombogam, on Saturday the 7th evening from 5p.m. to 6.30 p.m.

An initiative of Deepali Mody, the event is sponsored by the Goethe Institut, the British Council, Jaffna University, the CParts, and the English Academy of the Seminary.

“This is the very first time in 30 years that Sri Lankan writers across the divide have come together in Jaffna,” says Ashok Ferrey.

“Writing is the most powerful form of healing I know. I myself began writing during my father’s cancer and subsequent death, and it was a way for me of preserving the memory of that horrific time, at the same time exorcising it – a way of laying the ghost. I sincerely hope this will be the first of many such exchanges, and that as many people as possible will support this initiative.”
