A blast from the 80s with Soul Sounds

They need little introduction. When Soul Sounds stepped into the choral scene in the late 90s (at the time under the banner of Holy Family Convent), they were already showing promise of great things to come. In 2004, the choir successfully competed at the prestigious Llangollen Musical Eistedfodd, while still a part of the Holy Family Convent Senior Choir directed by the renowned Soundarie David Rodrigo. “Since then there has been no turning back,” says Soundarie of her students. The choir emerged gold medallists at the World Choir Games in Austria, and has since toured India, Australia, France, Malaysia, China, Kuwait and the USA. It’s a significant way to have come, and this month the choir will stage ‘Totally 80s’, part of their celebration of ten fantastic years as Soul Sounds.

“Because the year is significant of their ten years together, the choir will be putting on 10 shows this year covering different genres of music,” says Soundarie. Previous shows have covered Christmas tunes, gospel and jazz, so they’re making a very natural progression to 80’s music with this show. “We haven’t really done a show themed like this before,” notes the director. At Soul Sounds the choristers are passionate and particular about the music they sing and perform, so they’ve chosen to sing favourites from the 80s as “the era had some awesome hits” which they want to experiment with as a group.

“The arrangements will be unique but will also maintain the authenticity of the 80s genre of music,” says Soundarie. The repertoire promises to cover all your favourites from the 80s; Belinda Carlisle, Madonna, Starship, Tina Turner, Queen, Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston included. Soul Sounds was one of the first choral groups to put together tribute concerts for singers like Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston, says Soundarie, “so this show will be quite special for us.”

Of course, no Soul Sounds concert is complete without fantastic choreography and perhaps more importantly, backup; at this show you’ll find Soundarie on the piano, Christopher Prins on drums and Guyrika Weerasinghe on percussion along with other musicians like Sureka Amerasinghe, Revel Crake and Nilantha Ariyaratne.

Soul Sounds teams up with exclusive partners DIMO, Deutsche Bank and Fairway Holdings for its ten year celebration concerts.
Be there when Totally 80’s takes over Colombo on June 15 at the Lionel Wendt at 7.30 pm.
