Sadaharitha Plantations Ltd is offering housewives a novel way in which to engage in productive income generating opportunities through Agarwood cultivation, a media release issued by the company stated.

Agarwood is one of the world’s most expensive wood with growing demand from the Middle Eastern and European countries. The company’s latest venture is promoting Agarwood as a home garden crop for housewives and contributing towards their long-term income generation.

For housewives or even those employed, to grow and maintain Agarwood is an easy task. As with any other crop, the usual forms of fertiliser and irrigation are required to grow and sustain these trees. Maintenance of the crop is also not time consuming and when placed in one’s own garden, trees can be planted along the boundary wall or even to provide shade, the release stated.

The company explained that produced inside the Aquilaria trees, Agarwood is the aromatic, dark, fragrant resinous chemical substance found therein. While its hybrid ‘Walla Patta’ has been generating news, research has shown that most Walla Patta trees grown do not produce Agarwood resins.

A greater harvest can be derived from the Aquilaria trees when the production of the aromatic trunk is complete though the trees have not grown to larger proportions. A height of four metres and a width of one and a half is an ideal dimension of a tree suitable for harvesting. Usually within a period of eight years, these trees mature, it was noted.

Moreover for the harvesting of an Agarwood tree, specific technology exists for which the company said Sadaharitha holds the patent for Agarwood technology. For any individual who purchases over 10 plants, Sadaharitha will provide free expert advice and guidance on how to take care of the Agarwood trees. The company will also buy back the harvest based on a guaranteed price ensuring the sale of the harvest without any issues or problems.

The guaranteed minimum repurchase price of a single tree with good production of Agarwood is Rs.25, 000. However, while the usual price of an Agarwood tree is Rs 1,400, after eight years, owners can benefit a return of profit 15 times of this amount, it was stated.
