When Visakha Vidyalaya presents ‘Applause’ on from April 25-27 they’ll be cementing their status as one of the pioneer synchronized swimming school teams in the country. The school, with its considerably long history in the sport will host the event in aid of additional improvements to the Visakha pool.

Rovini Illukkumubura was only six when the school’s synchronized swimming team staged their first concert in 1995. She was 10 when she took part in her first show. Since then, she has been a regular in the circuit and even captained the school for the 2006/07 year. Today she coaches the young Visakhians, teaching them the ways of water and taking great pride in this new breed of water babies she has helped nurture.

Rovini tells us that this year’s show promises to be different to previous events, with the team of about 40 young swimmers having trained extensively for the past few months. Over 15 indoor and outdoor items have been choreographed to popular numbers sure to keep the audiences’ feet tapping throughout the night. They’ve picked music that absolutely no one can hate, she laughs. “You’ll never be bored.”

The show takes its title ‘Applause’ from Lady Gaga’s hit song by the same name; tune in to next week’s Mirror Magazine to find out what other numbers the young Visakhians have in store for you with the show. Tickets for the event can be obtained from the school’s Swimming Pool Complex.
