MedSource expands foreign medical transcription operations to Kandy

ri Lankan Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO) company offering medical transcription services mainly for US-based hospitals has expanded its operations to Kandy with the aim of providing job opportunities for youth in up country.

MedSource, a member of the Butani Capital Group opened a branch office in Kandy recently providing employment for 50 youths in the area.

Company chairman Kan Butani told the Business Times that most of the trainees recruited were from the Kandy region and were those who had passed in Science subjects at the GCE OL and GCE AL examinations. Some of them had worked in pharmacies and also hospitals.

The programme would be to train them for about six months after which they would be given a test and those who passed would be permanently employed as Medical Transcriptionists, he added. The work essentially involves maintaining of medical data for hospitals in the US.

Outlining the job description, Mr. Butani said that when a doctor examines a patient he speaks into a microphone describing the ailment, the diagnosis and the treatment suggested, the drugs prescribed, and whatever he says is heard clearly using a special set of headphones by the Medical Transcriptionist, typed on the computer and sent back on line after very rigid quality control.
“The payment is made per line which has to be 95 per cent accurate. We have about 80 employees in our Colombo office at present,” he said.

Mr. Butani said, the majority of its current revenues are derived from transcribing voice recordings of medical data made by doctors in US hospitals.

Dinesh Butani, Company Managing Director said that the trainees were accorded a professional training and paid a travelling allowance during the period of training, and were assured of a bright future.
