A man, who police believe intended to murder his wife, child and in-laws before escaping, however died when he himself got trapped in the fire started by him. According to police the man is alleged to have stabbed his wife, three-year-old daughter and later thrown gasoline on the wife’s parents before setting fire to their home in Kandasurundugama in Kataragama around 9.30 p.m.

The incident is believed to have taken place following a heated argument between the man and his wife. Neighbours later told police that the couple had been quarreling for more than a month over issues relating to the woman’s parents who were feeble and had to be attended to. The man felt that his wife was neglecting the homefront including his daughter while paying more attention to her parents, police said.
