The UNP has decided to suspend the membership of MP Palitha Thevarapperuma who acted in an unruly manner at the party Parliamentary Group meeting earlier this week, General Secretary Tissa Attanayaka said.

He said the party took the decision following a report submitted by Opposition Chief Whip John Amaratunga.

Mr. Attanayaka said if Mr. Thevarapperuma is found guilty he will be removed from the party.Mr. Thevarapperuma had raised objections that his son had not been nominated to contest the provincial council elections as another candidate from the Matugama area had been preferred.

However, party sources said that the party had decided to give his son nomination, but he did not turn up to sign the papers.
Meanwhile Colombo Mayor A.J.M.Muzzamil has also protested that the UNP Nomination Board had not granted approval for his wife Feroza to contest the Western Provincial Council (WPC) election.

“The UNP Leadership Council does not have the capacity to select the most suitable candidate,” he told the Sunday Times.
On Thursday Feroza Muzzamil resigned from the UNP National Executive Committee after she was refused nomination to contest the election to the WPC.
