With the increase in road accidents involving public transport vehicles, the Ministry of Transport is to introduce tough regulations. An official said the age group of those eligible to drive public transport vehicles would be limited to between 23 and 65. In addition, those with any criminal record would also be barred from driving public transport vehicles. It would be mandatory to have at least two years of driving experience to get special endorsement from the Commissioner General of Motor Traffic to get behind the wheel of a public transport vehicle.

Among the other mandatory requirements under the Motor Traffic (Public Service Driving Licence) regulations, those who apply must get a medical certificate issued by the National Transport Medical Institute and complete a first aid course at the same institute or another institute authorised by the Motor Traffic Chief. The official said drivers of public transport vehicles would also need to pass a mechanical knowledge examination and complete a training course on driving public transport vehicles.
