Mother, daughter among four held with gold at BIA

Four people including a mother and daughter were arrested on Friday night in different detections at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) while attempting to smuggle in and out of the country gold worth over Rs. 57 million, a senior Customs official said.
The mother and her young daughter had attempted to take out of the country 20 gold bangles cleverly concealed in four hand bags, he said.

The bangles valued at over five million rupees were confiscated and a fine of Rs. 25,000 each was imposed on the pair, he added.

In another detection on the same night, a Sri Lankan who had arrived on a scheduled flight from Dubai was nabbed with 10 kilograms of gold worth some Rs. 50 million, he said.

The gold was subsequently confiscated and the man was held pending further investigations, the official said.

This was followed by another detection, where a Sri Lankan man bound for the South Indian state of Chennai was nabbed with 464 grams of gold concealed inside a plastic container.

The gold was valued at a little over. two million rupees, the official added.
The gold was confiscated and the man fined Rs. 25,000, he said.
