Construction industry has strong future, says industry veteran

NEM Construction recently renewed a 33-year long association with the pioneer construction equipment supplier in Sri Lanka, United Tractor and Equipment (Pvt) Ltd (UTE) by purchasing a Cat paver from them.

“NEM Construction regularly purchases new machinery due to our tight schedules. With more than 800 units of construction machinery and trucks, we have one of the biggest fleets in the country. With tight schedules and large volumes machine uptime is one of the key considerations when we buy new equipment. For example during the 1st month of operation we laid more than 5,000 tons of asphalt using our new Cat paver which is a very satisfactory output,” said Chairman/Managing Director of NEM Construction Raja Nanayakkara in a statement.

Discussing the industry and its future, he said there is huge potential for the industry as the Government plans to develop the country, transforming it into an economic hub with good infrastructure, including a solid road network, ports and airports are key to achieving this goal.

He said the industry should be geared to share its experience right from the design stage as more often than not the main contractors are from foreign countries who have limited experience in Sri Lankan conditions. “We also gain a lot by working with foreign partners as they demonstrate a strong work ethic which is aimed at meeting deadlines and quality standards,” Mr. Nanayakkara added.
