A week of killer road accidents

Several road accidents that claimed lives were reported from around the country last week.

A cyclist, who sustained injuries on Wednesday, when his bicycle collided with a cab at James Peiris Mawatha, Colombo 02, later died at the Colombo National Hospital. The victim, Mohammad Zavahir (20), a resident of Watupitiya Akurana, worked as a restaurant assistant in Kollupitiya.

Colombo City Coroner, Ashroff Rumi said the death was due to excessive bleeding from head injuries.

Earlier on in the week down, a 69 year-old-man was knocked down by a speeding car while he was crossing the road at the Maligawatta junction on the Colombo-Kandy road on Monday. The deceased was Devadas Sithraveli, a father of two from Wellampitiya.
On the same day a 26-year-old motorist was killed in a collision with a car on the Badalgama Road in Negombo. The victim, Priyantha Lal Kumara, a resident from Badalgama, died of internal injuries at the Colombo National Hospital.

On Monday night, a carpenter working at the Colombo Port was knocked down by a lorry, delivering goods from the Port warehouse. The deceased, Nimal Karunathilake, a father of two, was a resident of Kurunegala. (CS)
