Sri Lanka’s northern traders are to request the Government to open the military-controlled Palaly airport and the KKS harbour for trading purposes particularly import export activity.

The request was made during a discussion held at the chamber of commerce Jaffna hall on Thursday in view of the need to speed up economic activity in the north in the post-war development phase.

The Chamber of commerce – Jaffna representatives, bank employees and the Northern Province Trade Minister participated in this discussion.

Chamber of Commerce Jaffna president J. Jeyasegaram who made this request noted that if the Palaly airport and KKS harbour are open for trade activities northern traders can import goods directly from India at a cheaper freight charge. It was also stated that opening the airport to international traffic could pave the way for the resumption of the Jaffna-India flight service.
