Tough battle for supremacy in the Ultimate Quiz Challenge

Independent groups competing in the IQA-WISDOM Quiz swept the boards on Saturday the 14th September at the Kingsbury, Colombo as they bagged the 5 top slots in the contest. These Independent Groups consisted most of Sri Lanka’s top and well known quizzers.
The overall winners were the team led by Chamara Sumanapala who walked away with the IQA-Wisdom Trophy plus Rs 100,000/= in cash and certificates of excellence while Vindana Ariyawansa’s team emerged runners-up and won Rs 50,000/= in cash and a trophy. Chamara’s team also won the best team award for the Individuals’ category.

The team led by Kasun Pathirage was placed 3rd while the rest of the teams were lead by by Deran Hewavaithrana, Moditha Sendanayake, Pramodha Weerasekera, Sisira Mark Antony, Indika Jayasinghe, Kasun Bandara Ekanayake, Imran Furkhan and Dr Wasantha Dissanayake.

Hatton National Bank had two teams in the competition and their A team led by Amila Gamage emerged as the best team in the banking sector while Dialog Axiata – led by Mohomed Rikaz , 99x Technology A team – led by Shirantha de Alwis and IFS – led by Asanka Gallage tied for the sector award under the mercantile category

Royal College Colombo A team led by Archanath Dickwella emerged winners in the Schools category.

Among the 12 schools that took part in Wisdom 2013 were several from the outstations- Richmond & Mahinda Colleges from Galle and Dharmaraja College from Kandy & Taxila Central from Horana all giving a tough fight to the Colombo schools including Royal, Ananda, Nalanda, Musaeus, Royal Institute and Wycherley Int’l.

The hall was packed to capacity as usual and a high standard was maintained throughout the competition with Ruwan Senanayake, Sri Lanka’s representative of the International Quizzing Association, UK compiling the questions once again with visuals and video clips to make it all the more interesting to the quizzers. Varuna Ratnaweera, did an excellent job as the Quiz Master for the fourth year in succession and the show was compered by Faizal Bongso.

A special feature at the Wisdom Quiz 2013 was that book vouchers worth Rs 2500/= each was presented to all schools teams that took part with the courtesy of Chartered Management Institute, Sri Lanka branch.

Conducted as a team event with 05 members in each team the questions were based on five subjects – Current Affairs, Sports, General Knowledge, Space & Astronomy & Arts/Literature and Entertainment with 10 questions per round, this event – now in its eighth year, is one of the most sought after competitions in the quizzing circle.

Mirror Education and Sunday Education Times and the Ada newspapers of Wijeya publications were the Media Partners of this Quiz.
Being a competition which helps broaden knowledge and improve one’s memory power, IQA Sri Lanka hopes to continue this quiz in the years ahead too.
