It is located in a glorious environment in the beautiful Nawayalathanna village which is part of the Pathadumbara electorate. The longest river in the island flows in front of the school.

Samudradevi B.V has a great historical origin from 1905; an association against alcohol in the village of Nawayalathanna was founded in 1890 by the villagers in a building, which was transformed to a school in 1905 after realising the importance of having a village school for educating Sinhalese Buddhist children in the village. The first student who enrolled was Aberathna Rathnayaka and subsequently he became a Cabinet Minister in the first Cabinet of Independent Ceylon. Later he became the chairman of the Senate Council of Ceylon.

It can be proudly stated that after passing more than nine decades in the past history, students with good knowledge, skills and attitudes were gifted to the nation by Samudradevi B.V.

When Mrs. Ranaweera assumed duties as principal, the number of students was 500. Today the number has increased to 800 students.

Presently there are more than 800 girls in this school studying in all primary, secondary and advance level sections and the teaching staff comprises about 40 teachers.

Many different practicable projects have been introduced to the school to improve English. This improvement can be clearly seen in the past two years due to the vision of this principal.
