External Affairs Minister G.L. Peiris and Petroleum Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa will represent Sri Lanka at the inauguration of new Iranian President Hassan Rowhani in Teheran today.
Earlier, Iran’s Majlis Protocol Office Director Mohammad Yasrebi had been widely quoted as saying that 11 presidents, including the Sri Lankan Head of State, would attend the event.
However, External Affairs Ministry Secretary Karunatilaka Amunugama said President Mahinda Rajapaksa would not attend.
Iranian television quoted Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abbas Araqchi, as saying that leaders and officials from across the world, except for the United States and Israel, had been invited to the event.
