The loss-making Mihin Lanka is negotiating with the Treasury to buy three new aircraft, including a Boeing, on lease, the airline’s chairman Nishantha Wickremesinghe said yesterday. “We have to compete with other international airlines. Therefore we should have a young fleet. We are negotiating with the Treasury to obtain financial assistance for the lease,” Mr. Wickremesinghe told the Sunday Times.
He said the airline’s present fleet comprised three aging aircraft which needed to be replaced.

Mr. Wickremesinghe said he would not be able to comment about the amount involved as talks with the manufacturers were still going on.  Losses of Mihin Lanka increased by almost two fold to Rs 1.9 billion in 2011/2012 in comparison to 2010/2011.
