Supreme Court ruling settles Vaddukoddai name row

After a battle in the Supreme Court over its name, the village market at Vaddukoddai will be known as the Vaddukoddai Public Market – and not by its ancient name Sivankovilady or by its LTTE-given name, Sinthupuram. The Supreme Court gave its ruling this week, after the petitioners and the respondents agreed to a compromise suggested by the court.

The petitioners, residents of the Vaddukoddai West, charged that the Valikamam Pradeshiya Sabha had held several meetings to formalise the name Sinthupuram, which was given by LTTE supporters to the Sivankovilady public market area in 2005. They said there was no proof in Pradeshiya Sabha records to indicate the name change.

The petitioners cited Valikamam West PS members and the Attorney General, among others, as respondents. The petitioners stated the name change had caused disharmony among the people and was unlawful, arbitrary and of no avail or consequence in law. They called on the court to give a ruling restoring the old name.

Following submissions from both sides, the Bench comprising Chief Justice Mohan Pieris and Justices Chandra Ekanayake and Sathiya Hettige suggested the compromise that the place be called Vaddukkodai public market.

Attorney Shyamal Collure instructed by Chandrasira Wijesinghe appeared for the petitioners. M. Mariampillaai appeared for the Pradeshya Sabha.
