Competition to feature exciting roundup of demonstrations by world renowned dancers
The El Latino Dance Academy (ELDA) will enthrall audiences and dance enthusiasts on July 28 with a spell-binding roundup of high calibre Ballroom and Latin American dancing and exciting demonstrations by visiting dance luminaries from the UK and Australia. The competition will be held at St. Thomas’ Sports Complex, Mount Lavinia.

This year, special focus will be placed on judging criteria for the championships. A total of five renowned international adjudicators from the UK, Australia, Malaysia and Sri Lanka will be present at the event, of which two will perform scintillating Latin American dance segments after the competition.

“It is important to keep the standard of the competition high” explains Kevin Nugara, professional Latin American and Ballroom dancer and founder of ELDA. “In our efforts towards raising Ballroom and Latin American dance as a sport in Sri Lanka, we are moving away from hosting the dance championship at a hotel, as has been the norm for such competitions, and will conduct the event at St. Thomas’ Sports Complex in keeping with the sports-oriented nature of the event. This will also ensure that costs are more affordable for dancers and the public, and therefore promote dancing to a wider audience”.

Upon conclusion of the championships, the adjudicators will remain in Sri Lanka for three days to conduct a series of lectures and training for dancers, interested individuals and dance schools.

The ELDA has become a familiar name in the Dancesport scene and under the guidance of Kevin Nugara, has seen the sport grow from strength to strength. Kevin is one of the leading and most recognized dancers in the country and has been instrumental in the growth of Dancesport in Sri Lanka.

He began dancing at a young age and his illustrious career, spanning 20 years, has seen him represent Sri Lanka at numerous international championships. At present, Kevin is the only Sri Lankan to have won international accolades in all Amateur categories.
