PS chairman allegedly solicited bribe from another PS chairman

The Walallawita Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Udeni Nanayakkara was yesterday remanded till Tuesday by Mathugama’s Acting Magistrate for allegedly soliciting a bribe. Police told Acting Magistrate R.A.M. Rajapakshe that the suspect had solicited Rs. 1.5 million as bribe from the Benthota Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman to give him a permit to transport sand and he was arrested while receiving the money.

The arrest was made by detectives of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption and officers from the Meegahathenna police following a complaint. Meanwhile, on Wednesday a Pradeshiya Sabha member from Anamaduwa was arrested on charges of assaulting an employee of Pallama Rural hospital. According to the complaint made to the police, PS member Anushka Priyashantha allegedly assaulted the hospital worker following an argument at the bus halt. The victim is receiving treatment at the Chilaw Hospital.

Also on Wednesday, Karuwalagaswewa Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Neil Weerasinghe was arrested for assaulting an irrigation engineer following an argument over releasing water from the Thabbowa Tank. The PS chairman was produced before the Puttalam Magistrate on Thursday and remanded till next Tuesday. On a previous occasion, too, the suspect was arrested for assaulting a person.
