The former Customs preventive Chief Ranjan Kanagasabai accused of obtaining a bribe has been directed to appear before the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption on Thursday (July 11) to record a statement regarding his declaration of assets and liabilities from 2004 onwards, Bribery Commission officials said.

Mr. Kanagasabai has been served with a fresh letter sent by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption to declare details of his assets and liabilities from the year commencing 2004. However, Mr. Kanagasabai had already declared his assets in 2009 as the Bribery Commission had required the same details for an inquiry in 2009.

In 2009 the Commission asked for details of the accounts held by the wife and children before January 2004, before March 31, 2005 and before August 1, 2008. They also asked for details of foreign trips of the family members from 2004 to 2008. Mr. Kangasabai is currently under interdiction for the alleged accusation of accepting a bribe of one million rupees from an importer of vehicle used spare parts to be assembled in Sri Lanka.

Mr. Kanagasabai claims that he was wrongfully accused by the complainant because he was directly involved in the detention of the containers of the importer bringing in spare parts under false declaration. C. R. de Silva, PC, counsel appearing for Mr. Kanagasabai earlier informed court that a sum of Rs. 40 million is due in the form of rewards is to his client.

The complaint was that he had taken the bribe to release the containers without further investigation, when he was on duty. Bribery Commission Spokesman SSP W.L.S. Somaweera refused to comment as the matter is still being probed.
