The number of supplementary or displaced voters for the upcoming Northern Provincial Council (NPC) elections has fallen short of government expectations. Only some 7,000 have applied to become voters in the North while government had expected about 18,000.
A senior Elections Department official said that by Friday they had received some 7,000 applications.

“Soon after the deadline for the registration ends on Tuesday, the Commissioner of Elections will announce the date for the NPC polls,” he said.

Parliament last month passed the Registration of Electors (Special Provisions) Bill enabling people who have not registered due to the conflict to register as voters in the Jaffna and Wanni districts.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Friday issued a proclamation directing the Commissioner of Elections to hold the NPC elections. Meanwhile the Central and North Western Provincial Councils were dissolved on Friday night. The Commissioner of Elections is due to issue a gazette notification calling for nominations for these two councils as well next week.
