China has offered US$ 2.2 billion (around Rs. 278 billion) worth of new loans to Sri Lanka, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei told a media briefing on Friday in Beijing.

Mr. Hong was responding to questions after the recent visit of President Mahinda Rajapaksa to Beijing where the two countries signed a defence agreement besides a host of deals to enhance infrastructure projects in the country. Mr. Hong did not disclose details of all the agreements but said the development loan would be used for infrastructure projects while China has agreed to provide defence technology as well as training for Sri Lankan troops.

The two countries agreed to strengthen defence cooperation while their defence ministries would intensify exchange programmes, he said.
