The British Council recently organised a skills forum in partnership with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Skills Development with the aim of sharing some of the UK’s recent experience in developing an advanced Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) system with a special focus on university colleges. The forum featured three key speakers from the UK: Chris Cooper, Senior Skills Adviser, British Council; Stephan John, Associate Skills Adviser, British Council; and James (Jim) Aleander, Associate Skills Adviser, British Council and Principal of Learning Ltd., UK.

Welcoming the high profile participants to the forum, Assistant Director of British Council Sri Lanka, Harriet Gardner, said: ‘As a cultural relations organisation that strives to provide opportunities to people worldwide, we organised this skills forum to share the UK’S experience in developing technical and vocational education.

We are delighted to support the development of the current TVET system in Sri Lanka, and particularly that of the university colleges.”
Mr. A. R. Desapriya, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Skills Development, and Hon. Mohan Lal Grero, Monitoring MP, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Skills Development, also spoke at the event. The forum focused on exploring TVET at a number of levels, including strategic planning, curriculum development, institutional delivery, and quality assurance.

The participants of the skills forum were a mix of senior members of the public education sector and industrial employers. Following the skills forum, the British Council also organised a networking session to provide the opportunity and platform for the participants to interact with each other, and share their ideas with the visiting speakers from the UK.

With the intention of taking further action with regard to improving the TVET system in Sri Lanka, the British Council organised a one-day workshop to take place the following day at the Ministry. This workshop was attended by a smaller group of participants and was aimed at supporting the Ministry’s immediate endeavours in developing the university college network in Sri Lanka.
