Popularly known as little Rome, Negombo with Portuguese routes was an important trading point since ancient times, with its large lagoon providing shelter to sea faring vessels and was said to supply the ‘every best of wild cinnamon In the universe’.

 

After 500 years, Negombo has changed rapidly and is a popular tourist destination around the world. The population in Negombo is predominantly Catholic while narrow street and churches are reminders of the Portuguese and Dutch influences to the culture and architecture of the area. The Portuguese built a fort in Negombo after they took over the spice trade from the Moors in the early 1500 and then in the 1646 saw the Dutch take over and the current fort that guards the approach was built by the Dutch in 1672.

Negombo offers some of the best beaches in Sri Lanka and its close proximity to the airport has helped Negombo to gather name as a great sun and sand interlude during round trips In Sri Lanka. From spice trading to tourism, Negombo attracts, nearly 80% of the tourists visiting Sri Lanka as the first stay of the tour or as the last lap of the tour.
