Past student of IIT Thilan Warnakulage is a young IT professional, ambitious with a vision of Technopreneurship which is a technology savvy entrepreneur who is visionary, innovative, creative, dynamic and highly passionate about bridging the technology and business needs. Thilan recommended IIT as one of the best options for students seeking a qualification from not just an international affiliation but one that also helps students chose careers in a multitude of fields due to the flexibility and the practicality of the degree programme.

“Before joining IIT, I had just completed my A/Ls in mathematical stream and was waiting for the university entry. I got to know about IIT scholarship programme through my brother and I was lucky to get selected to the first batch of IIT Scholarship Programme after going through several tough exams and interviews. At that time IIT was the only private organization which was providing world class IT degrees.”

Thilan currently holds the responsibility as an Engineering Manager at Zone24x7 which is one of the leading global providers of technology innovation services with headquarters in San Jose, California. His responsibilities as a senior manager with technopreneurial skills , consist of being in charge of working along with other senior executives in defining and offering innovative technology solutions to its clientele, business development & relationship management of key accounts and is also responsible to uplift the engineering and consultation processes.

For this, his course work has helped him immensely not only in the technical side but also on the managerial aspect as well. “Knowing that learning never stops in knowledge industries like IT is the biggest message I got. Unlike other industries, IT industry knowledge base is rapidly changing. To survive in this fast growing industry without much effort, we require a strong foundation in fundamental principles, this is what I believe as the key focus and help I got from the well defined course structure at IIT. There were many practical assignments included in the course structure where we had plenty of exposure to innovative technology, to provide highest quality solutions through various researches, which also helped to practise the conceptual knowledge we gained,” he said.

The overall grooming received at IIT on technical and soft skills, and the right attitude ,helped him to climb the corporate ladder faster. He also noted that many of the IIT Alumni members are at the top executive levels of many organizations.

Speaking on the mandatory one year internship, he noted that internship provides an immense practical experience in the industry from the beginning which sharpens overall skills to be successful in the academia and later in IT industry and to have a quick career progress.

Thilan also stated that the support extended by the lectures is crucial for those who seek additional support for academics. “I must highlight the knowledge and experience of the lecturers and they shared lot of practical examples with us to digest the conceptual knowledge with practical views which we were provided with, with good laboratory facilities.” Visiting lecturers from the industry and foreign lecturers from the parent university UK, collectively provided the rich delivery of the academic contents and practical experience. “This combination is something very unique and hard to find in other institutes in Sri Lanka and this will definitely provide an edge for IIT students.

Also individual focus was given in right instances. “Especially when group assignments were given, I remember that tough individual viva’s and presentations were conducted to assess the individual contribution as well as their knowledge which made everyone to work hard.”

Recently Sri Lanka has been identified as a ‘hidden gem’ for IT outsourcing by A.T. Kearney. “As citizens of Sri Lanka we are obliged to take the Sri Lankan IT industry to the next level of the value chain with value additions and innovations. Paradigm shift is required to the way we think and act. Education institutions have a greater role to play in achieving this. In this regard, I highly recommend IIT for those, looking for a demanding career in the field of IT & Business as an ideal place to gain knowledge, interact and grow” concluded Thilan.
