A local car dealer who allegedly hacked into an online auction site and made bogus orders that led to the blacklisting of a Japanese car exporter was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).
The suspect from Katugastota, Kandy was arrested after the Japanese exporter made a complaint to the police.

According to a CID official attached to the Cyber Crime Division, the suspect wanted to damage the business relationship between the Japanese national and his five Sri Lankan importers, who were the suspect’s business rivals.

The detective said the suspect had hacked into the email account of one of the rival dealers and used the stolen password to gain access to the Japanese trader’s site.

The detective said the suspect, using the stolen identity, had ordered as many as 10 vehicles at unusually high prices, making it difficult for the Japanese exporter to pay on behalf of his client. When he delayed the payments, the auction company revoked his licence and blacklisted him.

The detective said the suspect had been remanded and further investigations were continuing.
