‘Prathiroo’ reveals value of motherhood

Set in the rural backdrop of a village in the island, the story revolves around a courageous village woman named Leelawathie and her son, Wickrama. Leelawathie raises her son in an exemplary manner. A bright student with a passion for history and literature Wickrama awaits university entrance with the aim of becoming a scholar to serve the country.

However his world changes in an instance when the village comes under recurrent terrorist attacks when some of his loved ones are brutally killed by the terrorists. This tragedy changes the destiny of the mother and son. They decide they have had enough of this wickedness. Mother wanted her son to join the army to rid the menace of terrorism from her beloved motherland. The son willingly does so with his mother’s blessings.

Army life sharpens his determination to free his motherland from the clutches of terrorism. However he is torn apart once he gets news that his mother is fatally ill. He wavers between the decision of returning to the village to take care of his frail mother and the need to serve his motherland.

His mother proclaims that there is no difference between the mother who has given birth to him and the motherland which provided the background for his upbringing. The strong woman makes her son return to the battlefront assuring she can look after herself. With the assurance of the village elders that her mother will be looked after Wickrama returns to the battlefront with new vigour.

The movie flows along with Wickrama’s decision and his attitudes towards his two mothers: the mother who gave birth to him and the motherland.

The technical crew behind the screen includes Ravindra Guruge as editor, Chandana Jayasinghe as cinematographer, Dharshana Ruwan Dissanayake as music director, Aruna Dias as art director, Imal Shanka Peiries as make up artiste.

Lyrics written by Dr. Suriyarachchi playback is done by Amerasiri Peiries, Nanda Malani and Indika Upamali. Prathiroo is co-produced by Dr. Harishchandra Yakandawela and Dr, Kapila Suriyarachchi.
