Rippon Balika Vidyalaya, Galle is an exclusive Buddhist girls’ school founded in 1857 by Rev. Joseph Rippon. Compared to its humble beginning with 8 students and 5 teacher, the school after a long span of 114 years of assistance to Southern province has full-fledged to over 2600 students steered by 96 teachers on the staff.

Founded in 1857 by great missionaries Rev. Joseph Rippon, as a seat of learning for the children in southern Ceylon at a period when there was a huge gap for such institutions. It was named as “Richmond Hill Girls Boarding School” in 1871 which records in the history as the oldest girls’ school in southern province.

Declaration of Rippon Balika as a government school in 1879, which had been a private missionary Educational Institution before, was the instigation of a new epoch.

Mrs.P.C.R. Perera, the first Sinhala Buddhist Principal of note after 10 missionary principals took over the head seat of the school in 1942. During her headship the College progressed both in studies and in extracurricular activities.

The College navigate in to a fresh chapter with the opening of the tertiary education advanced level arts classes in 1963. Jot expansion of studies advanced level Home science and commerce were conducted in 1967. Rippon Balika was conferred with the National School status in 1994 and presently the school consists of a primary and a secondary school with classes ranging from Grade 1 to 13.

The school has taken giant strides after the assumption duties of the present principal Mrs. P.N.Rajapaksha in 2003. The principal with her vice-principals and deputy principals devote their services in providing knowledge and skills and assisting the pupils in the development of attitudes of the girls to face the future challenges.

More than 10 Clubs and Societies such as Commerce, Buddhist, Art societies and Girl guide, environmental, first aid and aesthetic units are available to fuel the talents and interests of the students and to integrate with other schools not only in Sri Lanka but in foreign countries as well.

Rippon Balika Students have always been the all island and district level achievers in both academic and non-academic fields. It is now an unbroken record in the province as they reached the top among the girls schools for their 2011 G.C.E.(O/L) results and district 4th place in their 2011 G.C.E. (A/L) results.

The College Western Band

The extracurricular activities take high up place in Rippon Balika Vidyalaya which helps them to meet their motto effortlessly. The media unit plays a major role in the skill development and D.Apsara Sewwandi elected as one of the best announcer/compeer among the 10 in the island. The college emerged the island 2nd place in the New Innovators Competition, 2011. The athletics and games teams annually bring huge victories and colours to the college. Randini Nilnayani participated for the “Black Belt” training course which was held at Korean Kong Go University.

Moreover the college debate team, and language units carry successes to the college. Apart from these the Aesthetic Sections bring glory to mother Rippon each year with National Level triumphs.

The students who engage in skilled work, handing over the chairs which they repaired to the college library.

Rippon Balika Vidyalaya Alumni is full of Personalities of utmost caliber in a several fields such as Professors, Medial fields, Political field, Educational, Medical, Law and Sports field. The Zonal Educational Director Mr.Daya Fernando, former principal Mr. Nimal Samarapala, Present principal of Galle, Sangamitta BMV Mrs.Saraswathy Dahanayake, Professor of Colombo university Mrs.Indrani Munasinghe, Manager of BOC Mrs.Sheela Wimalawardana, Professor of Ayurveda University Mrs. H.G.S.P.Hewa Geethanage, Kadawatha police HQI and the international boxer Mrs.Nelka Shiromala are very few of them.Aiming at their vision, the school constantly endeavors to endow with an education to facilitate the pupils to accomplish their potential and to meet responsibilities to the society in maintenance with the goal of the founder.
