Four different investigations have been launched into Friday’s bloody mayhem at the Welikada jail where 27 people were killed and 59 injured, in one of Sri Lanka’s worse ever prisoner riots, officials said yesterday.
They said the probes were to be conducted by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), the Colombo Crime Division, the Prisons Department and the Prisons Reforms Ministry.

The investigations will centre on the cause for the clashes that erupted between the prisoners and heavily armed Special Task Force (STF) personnel who had entered the jail to carry out a search for banned items hidden inside the cells.

Among those on the critically injured list are the STF Commandant C. Ranawana and several prisoners.
Officials claimed that prisoners in a particular block had overpowered the STF personnel and guards before arming themselves to the teeth after breaking into the prison’s armoury.
