Mitt Romney’s debate performances are 2-0 — when it comes to creating instant internet memes.  His ‘binders full of women’ remark became a trending topic on Twitter within minutes of him uttering the words while telling a story about his search for women to fill cabinet positions when he was Massachusetts governor.

Before the debate was even over, the meme already had a spawned thousands of comments, as well as its own Tumblr blog.
In this way, Romney’s ‘binders full of women’ comment joined the ranks of his remark about Big Bird during the last debate — it was an unintentional sound bite, it has managed to take on a life of its own.

A new Twitter account, @RomneysBinder, had more than 30,000 followers by the end of the debate and tweeted: ‘Boy, I’m full of women! #debates’. A second, @Romneys_Binder, garnered more than 12,000 followers by the end of the debate, and BindersFullofWomen.com was snapped up within minutes.

The comment from the Republican presidential candidate came in response to a question voter Katherine Fenton asked President Barack Obama. ‘In what new ways do you intend to rectify the inequalities in the workplace, specifically regarding females making only 72 percent of what their male counterparts earn?’ she queried.

When the turn came for Romney to answer, he said: ‘An important topic, and one which I learned a great deal about, particularly as I was serving as governor of my state, because I had the chance to pull together a cabinet and all the applicants seemed to be men.

‘And I said, “How come all the people for these jobs are are all men.” They said, “Well, these are the people that have the qualifications.” And I said, “Well, gosh, can’t we find some women that are also qualified?” ‘We took a concerted effort to go out and find women who had backgrounds that could be qualified to become members of our cabinet.

‘I went to a number of women’s groups and said, “Can you help us find folks,” and they brought us whole binders full of women.’
Romney went on to say that he his administration was commended as having the most women in senior leadership positions of any state in the country.
