Colombo city and its suburbs are to have two elevated highways to ease traffic congestion, the Government has decided.
Road Development Authority (RDA) Chairman R.W.R. Premasiri told the Sunday Times, one of the projects would be from Kottawa to Fort, as an extension of the Southern Expressway, while a second elevated highway will be from Polhengoda, Narahenpita to Galle Road.

He said that maximum consideration was extended to minimise the number of houses to be removed, in having the project as an elevated highway.

Mr. Premasiri said that the highway from Polhengoda to Galle Road will be erected above the Wellawatte canal which leads to the sea on the Bambalapitiya-Wellawatte boundary.

The projects scheduled to commence next year, are expected to be funded by the ADB and JICA.
Surveying of the related areas are currently under way.
