Edexcel spearheads the pursuit of excellence in schools

Accordingly, last week over 100 eager and dedicated principals and heads of both international and private schools walked in to the Grand Ball room of the Galadari Hotel to be privy to the incites of speakers Major General David Shaw CBE, President for Scotland-based Unicorn Applied Research Collaboration and Matthew Anderson is the Vice-President of Unicorn Arc. Following the event the connoisseurs also conducted a workshop with the same aim in mind for over 400 school prefects.

Premila Paulraj -Asst Vice President for Pearson India and Subcontinent who welcomed the Principals said the programme was organized by Edexcel, which works in line with the theme “Always Learning”, with the clear vision of optimizing success in schools. She is of the view that schools must innovate and make use of the latest technology to continuously evolve towards providing a complete education.

Although it was a formal setting, the workshop was conducted in a casual and interactive manner, the speakers were open and especially eager to receive input from the audience. The programme was based on analysing leadership approaches from internationally recognized schools in the UK and linking them to essential strategic leadership skills and concepts. Citing that most of the schools have far greater facilities than schools here, David Shaw urged the principals to focus on the attributes applicable to the education sector in Sri Lanka and said “there is nothing wrong in copying a good thing”. The audience proceeded to scrutinize and bang their own drums to find answers to the question “what constitutes a successful school?” and several straightforward points were put forward.

While David elucidated on the factual and technical elements of the sessions, Mathew Anderson focused on self awareness especially in relation to inspiring, teamwork and communication. Mathew requested the eager listeners to remember that “a leader who smiles more is more successful” and assured the theory has been scientifically proven. After successfully getting their message across to those who spearhead education, the speakers next mentored student leaders on the role they play in the education sector. The students also engaged in competitive activities in the true spirit of sportsmanship and grab the attention of over 400 young leaders.

The Principals were content about the manner in which the workshop was conducted and it was evident the student leaders had enjoyed the afternoon. The participants unanimously agreed that it was a day well spent and the event was a great success.
