The much looked forward to motor rally event the Southern Monsoon Rally conducted by the Southern Motor Sports Club (SMSC) is scheduled to be held on September 22 and 23. The rally popularly knowned as the “Journey through the Wilderness” which is held for the 14th successive year will cover approximately just under 600kms that will venture through four districts namely Matara, Galle, Ratnapura and Hambantota.

The day and night rally will see drivers and riders participating in various categories which is for non rally prepared standard vehicles, rally prepared modified vehicles, veterans, and novices with the last named being only for members of the SMSC and the team event for rally prepared and non rally prepared categories.

The SMSC could be proud and boast of being the only club in Sri Lanka which conducts TSD type rallies which meets the needs of those taking part in a rally meet of any nature.  The Southern Monsoon Rally will be worked off in three stages with the first vehicle being flagged off on September 22 at 7.00 p.m. opposite the Sanath Jayasuriya Stadium in Matara.

The first stage will see the participants covering 190kms from Matara to Udawalawe which will go through the wilderness of Matar, Weligama, Akuressa, Pitabeddara, Waralla, Walasmulla, Kirama, Katuwana, Middeniya, Panamura and Uda Walawe. The terrain will comprise of 50 percent tar and 25 percent each of concrete and gravel and the arrival of the last vehicle is scheduled to be at 11.00 p.m.
The second stage from Udawalawe to Hambantota is scheduled for September 23 with the first being flagged off at 2.00 p.m. and due to end at 6.00 p.m.

The 196kms route consisting of 25 percent concrete and 75 percent gravel will cover the cities of Hambegamuwa, Sooriyawewa, Meegahajandura, Thanamalwila, Lunugamvehera, Bandagiriya and Hambantota. The third and final stage which is 150kms from Hambanatota to Tangalle comprising of 50 percent tar and 50 percent gravel is scheduled to be flagged at 10.00 a.m. will go along the route of Sooriyawewa, Embilipitiya, Angunakola, Ranna and end at Tangalle at 2.00 p.m. There the participants will be transported from Tangalle to Matara which is approximately 50kms.

The SMSC conducted MotorPlus Southern Monsoon Rally which is sponsored by Sri Lanka Insurance with Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel and Ranna 212 as co sponsors will come to end with a glittering award ceremony scheduled to be held at 6.30 p.m. on September 23.
