‘Deewari’ and ‘Sandagiri Pawwa’

‘Deewari’ and ‘Sandagiri Pawwa’ bagged most of the awards at the recently held 36th SIGNIS Salutation for creative presentation in cinema and television over the year 2011.

Salinda Perera’s ‘Deewari’ won major awards including the Most Acclaimed Direction while Sangeetha Weeraratne, late Joe Abeywickrema and late Trilicia Gunawardena were awarded for their acting. It also won recognitions in art direction (Sunil Wijeratne), make up (Ranjith Wickremasinghe), music (Pradeep Ratnayake) and camera (Lal Wickremarachchi).

‘Dheewari’ shared the Creative Direction for the year 2011 along with ‘Gamini’ directed by Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekara.

Bimal Jayakody was adjudged for his Creative Acting performance (Gold) for his performance in ‘Gamini’ while Dilhani Ekanayake won the Creative Acting (Silver) for her role in the same film.

In the cinema category actor Lucky Dias won the Creative Assistant Acting in ‘Challengers’. Saman Kumara Liyanage’s ‘Sandagiri Pawwa’ was the most outstanding teleplay in the year 2011 as it won most of the awards including the award for the Most Acclaimed teledrama, Creative Direction and Creative Acting (male) for Sanjeewa Upendra and Creative Acting (female) Himali Siriwardena. ‘Sandagiri Pawwa’ also won recognitions for its camera, art direction, music, editing and screenplay.
Sudath Rohana’s major tele direction ‘Swayanjatha’ also won several acclaims for its screenplay and acting.

Addressing the colourful evening at the BMICH, Rev. Fr. Benedict Joseph, National Director SIGNIS (OCIC) invited the artistes to take the forefront to build society through art and cinema.

He invited the artistes to develop society where human values have degenerated at a rapid speed. “Give priority to humanity when you make cinema,” Fr. Benedict Joseph stressed. His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, the Archbishop of Colombo graced 36th SIGNIS Salutation as the chief guest.

SIGNIS International Tributes were given to Andrew Jayamanna, Somapala Leelananda, Hemapriya Kandambi and Chandrika Siriwardena for their contributions to country’s cinema and music fields. Priyan R. Wijebandara won the ‘Jayawilal Wilegoda Memorial’ award while Bandula Naradha Nissanka was awarded with the ‘Cyril B. Perera Memorial’ award for his contribution to cinema literature.
