Acclaimed filmmaker Prasanna Jayakody who won international accolades with his debut ‘Sankara’ makes a come back with ‘Karma’, a movie which has already won some of the renowned film festivals around the world.

‘Karma’ the Sri Lankan film participated in several international film festivals including the Pusan International Film Festival in South Korea, the Sao Paulo International Film Festival in Brazil, the Rotterdam International Film Festival in the Netherlands, the Chicago International Film Festival, the Bildrausch International Film Festival in Switzerland, the Marrakech International Film Festival in Morocco and the Isolacinema International Film Festival in Slovenia. This film is slated to be released at Regal Colombo and other CEL circuit cinemas around the country.

‘Karma’, a cinematic venture with a powerful story exceptionally presented with visual symbols is woven around three characters whose lives are interconnected. Piyal played by Jagath Manuwarna is troubled by feelings of guilt over his mother’s death, attempts to relieve himself of related, repressed tensions, through a woman, living in a house adjacent to his apartment.

Michelle Herft playing an impressive role as Amanda, is Piyal’s thirty-two year old neighbour who feeds his fantasies. Through brief encounters, Piyal begins to see Amanda as the woman who is able to fill the void that existed within him. Amanda is soon diagnosed with breast cancer.

Amanda’s lover Nadee (Nadeeka Guruge), after learning that his partner is suffering from cancer, begins to gradually lose interest in her. Even as Amanda’s external beauty depreciates, she realizes that Piyal’s fascination in her of a sexual nature. She seduces him in the hope of releasing him from this. Piyal realizes then that she suffers from breast cancer and is soon filled with remorse. Feeling guilty for committing his most vile act, the young man decides to dedicate himself to look after Amanda till her death.

Scripted by Prasanna Jayakody and Jagath Manuwarna, the director of cinematography of‘Karma’ is Palitha Perera while Rangana Sinharage, Bathiya Dunusinghe and Sudesh Kumarasinghe did the editing.

Art direction handled by Sunil Wijeratna, Naradha Thotagamuwa was in charge of makeup while Nadeeka Guruge and Sumudu Guruge wrote the musical score. The film is co-produced by Ceylon Theater Private Limited, Sky Entertainers Private Limited and Magic Lantern Private Limited.

Prasanna’s first film ‘Sankara’ won Silver Pyramid at Cairo International Film Festival, Best Debut Director and Netpeck Award at Kerala International Film Festival, Jury special prize – at Turkey Silk Road film Festival, Critics Prize at Dhaka International Film Festival and International Golden Karagoz Film Award at Bursa International Silk Road Film Festival.
